High Point: Pretty decent “first draft” attempt at the set I’m building! A lot of the new transitions went better than I expected, especially since I’d spent a while picking out tracks rather than mixing them. I remembered more mix points than I thought I did. Also, RW2 (Rave Weapon 2) is GREAT for mashups and acapellas, I need to try other things off the Ammunition EPs as DJ tools.
Low Point: The mess at the start.I DID forget some of the mix points, resulting in stuff not going according to plan (Jah No Partial, Raw Chicken -> The Spell). I managed to actually recover a few times (Bring In The Katz Mashup - looping for fun and profit!) but timing issues fucked me up, especially towards the end of that track. Also I can’t use pre-fade listen/PFL until I get a proper audio mixer, so sometimes things just pop in where they shouldn’t (Trap On Acid).
All of this was done using Virtual DJ and a keyboard and mouse, which I wouldn’t recommend to anyone, ever. I can use vinyl, I can use CDJs, but until I get my immigration info sorted out and get a job I won’t be able to afford proper decks.
To do: - Probably get rid of the mashup with ‘Bring in the Katz’. Too much mid-range clash. I’ll probably keep the one with Trap On Acid, though. - Look into getting something that’ll allow me to use PFL. Not having it is annoying as hell and makes me sound like I have no clue how to beatmatch. - Practice, practice, practice. Especially with timing.
